MENTORSHIP REFLECTION

Mentor: Kathryn Markham-Petro

Having Kathryn Markham-Petro as my mentor throughout CEDP was an incredibly valuable experience. She was phenomenal, as she was not only knowledgeable and experienced, but also approachable, insightful, and generous with her time and guidance.

What stood out most was how seamlessly she balanced personal and professional mentorship. Kathryn was an incredible sounding board, whether I was navigating classroom challenges, considering long-term career planning, course prep, navigating student challenges, or simply needing space to process. Her ability to listen without judgment while offering practical and thoughtful advice made every conversation feel supportive and productive. She provided insights that helped me reflect more deeply on my teaching practice and how to stay grounded in my values, especially in the face of competing demands or uncertainty. Kathryn's mentorship reminded me of the importance of aligning professional development with personal well-being, and I always left our conversations feeling clearer, more confident, and more connected.

Key Takeaways

  • A strong mentor listens first, then guides. Kathryn never rushed to advise but instead helped me find clarity through conversation.

  • Mentorship isn't just about career progression, it's also about confidence, resilience, support, and perspective.

  • The impact of a mentor who models authenticity and empathy can't be overstated.

Conclusion

Kathryn’s mentorship was the most meaningful components of my CEDP experience. She helped me navigate both opportunities and challenges with integrity and thoughtfulness. I’m grateful for her mentorship and know that the tools, insights, and encouragement she offered will stay with me.
